The Most Important Step of All
For as long as you have a transplant, you will have to take one or more immunosuppressive medications. These medications prevent your body from rejecting your new kidney.
You must take each medication exactly the way your transplant physician has instructed you, without missing a single dose. Not taking your medication at the right time and in the correct amount is one of the most common reasons for transplant failure.
When taking your immunosuppressive medication, follow these instructions exactly:
Never skip a dose or change the amount of medication you take unless your physician so instructs |
If you accidentally skip a dose, call your transplant coordinator or physician immediately. Don't decide what to do on your own |
If you experience side effects, call your transplant coordinator or physician—but do not stop taking your medication |
Do not take any over-the-counter medication without first consulting your physician |
Always check to see if your medication looks exactly the same as previous doses. If there are any changes in your medication's appearance, call your transplant coordinator or physician immediately |
Remember: not taking your medication is one of the most common reasons for transplant failure |
