What to Expect in the Weeks After Your Kidney Transplant
A new beginning
Your surgery is over, you've made a strong recovery, and you can begin to look forward to your new life. But even though your transplant was successful, this is by no means the end of the journey.
A lifetime commitment
Keeping yourself and your new kidney healthy will require a lifetime commitment. Your transplant team will continue to provide information and support, but it's up to you to follow their instructions—every single day. For instance, you can't miss your scheduled follow-up visits and lab tests. You'll have to exercise regularly and continue to watch what you eat. Most important, you'll need to take your medication each and every day—and in the exact way your transplant team tells you.
Don't feel overwhelmed
This all may seem a little overwhelming, but that's normal. Remember—being prepared and learning the facts give you the best chance of success. Most important of all, think positively. Your healthy, independent new life has begun.
