Organ rejection is a scary possibility and, unfortunately, it's not uncommon to experience an episode of rejection. To protect your new kidney, it's important to take your medicine exactly as directed to do your part to avoid rejection. Be aware of the signs of rejection and alert your transplant team immediately if you have any of these symptoms.
Signs to look for include:
- Tenderness above the new kidney
- A drop in urine output or blood in urine
- Flu-like feelings
- Fever above 100°F
- Weight gain (more than three pounds in two days)
If you experience organ rejection, you may have to go to the hospital and your transplant team may take some tests and prescribe additional medicine to stop the kidney transplant rejection process.
