myfortic MPA (mycophenolic acid)

myfortic is a medicine designed for people who have received a kidney transplant. It helps prevent your body's immune system from rejecting your new kidney, so it can function more normally as part of your body. myfortic is taken in combination with other antirejection drugs. The most common side effects of myfortic therapy include constipation, nausea, and urinary tract infection in new transplant patients, and nausea, diarrhea, and upper respiratory infection in long-term transplant patients.

myfortic delivers the same highly effective antirejection treatment, called mycophenolic acid (MPA), as CellCept®. The difference between myfortic and CellCept is that myfortic is an enteric-coated formulation of MPA in a delayed-release tablet. This special coating keeps it from dissolving in your stomach right after you take it. The active ingredient is not released until it reaches your small intestine. It's important not to crush, chew, or cut myfortic tablets. Swallowing the tablet whole ensures the enteric coating remains intact. myfortic is patent protected (cannot be produced in generic form) until 2017. So if your healthcare professional prescribes myfortic, you can be confident that you'll receive myfortic every time with no chance of generic substitution.
